Tonight (Jan 3, 2016), CBS News: 60 Minutes had a segment on the Mafia’s involvement in every aspect of the food business – including olive oil from harvest to table – and what young Italian olive growers are doing about it. One of those interviewed asserted 75 -80% of the olive oil sold in America, is fake or at best diluted. You can view the segment on 60 Minutes Overtime (9) or see below.

GMO salmon to be labelled when available for sale!

Back on November 21, I wrote an article on FDA approval of GMO salmon without mandatory labeling, despite reliable polls showing 89% of voting Americans support mandatory labeling of GMO/GE foods in an easy-to-read format. But that is about to change as congress has directed the FDA to write guidelines for mandatory labeling of the fish. (more…)

QR code

Can you translate the sample QR code image (right)? More importantly, do you want a QR code as the only type of  GMO label on GMO-containing foods?

Or do you want the product label to state clearly in English: “Contains Genetically Engineered (GMO) Ingredients”? (more…)

It is no secret that the fight to label GMOs is fraught with controversy. Three states (Vermont, Connecticut, and Maine) have mandated the labeling, but Big Ag is spending big bucks to fight back. Are you ready to defend our Right to Know? (more…)

Today’s breaking news is good news for those of us opposed to GMOs and the use of toxic pesticides. Both glyphosate (Roundup) and 2,4-D (part of Agent Orange) are known to be toxic and harmful for human health, yet they are heavily sprayed on GMO crops resistant to them, to kill the weeds that compete with the crops. Anyone (human, livestock, etc.)  who eats the crop (corn, soy, and others) gets the poison too. (Note that this product was only recently approved by the EPA in October 2015)

“The EPA said it received new information from Dow AgroSciences – the registrant of Enlist Duo – that suggests two active ingredients could result in greater toxicity to non-target plants.” (1) It then issued a ruling that may effectively end the threat of “Agent Orange Corn.” (more…)

The latest GMO foods to be approved by the USDA/FDA include:

  • Russet potato  ‘Innate’ (for baking or deep frying) from J.R. Simplot Co. approved by USDA without mandatory labeling.
  • AquAdvantage farmed Salmon developed by Aqua Bounty Technologies, approved by FDA who recommended, but did not require, labeling of these fish as GMO.

For more information about the GMO salmon and efforts to fight back and mandate GMO labeling on GMO fish, see the Center for Food Safety’s site: centerforfoodsafety.org/issues/309/ge-fish. They are considering suing the FDA over this approval without mandatory labeling.
