Olin’s farm house

By Catherine Haug, March 25, 2017 (Photos, right and below, from Olin)

The following is from Olin, a member of our email list:

Who’s your farmer? Does someone out there want to start a small orchard or veggie farm?

Life throws changes and I need to move our family to the Great Falls area for off farm income.  My wife and I are selling our ten acre place here, [south of] Kalispell.  I’ve put a lot of effort into planting things here and  want to pass the torch to someone who wants to keep this land in ag.  There is an NRCS EQIP grant for a high tunnel greenhouse. This could be a good fit for the right person, couple, or team of people willing to live communally.   Plenty of ground and different kinds of terrain for multiple hands and multiple ventures. Deer fence is up… take it from here.

We are asking $375K, higher if we have to end up listing with a realtor.  We’ll have pictures available shortly, please contact me if your interested.

For more about this property, and for owner’s contact information, see printable pdf file: Olin’s PropertyDescription. See another photo, next. (more…)

Food-Swapping in the Flathead

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

by Catherine Haug, August 28, 2011

Flathead Food Swappers is a new Facebook group, launched by Kathie Lapcevic and a friend. I have added this link to our ESP links column under Food: Local/Organic Links, for your future reference. Here’s a printable flyer about the group: Flathead Food Swappers Flyer.

From Kathie Lapcevic:

Flathead Food Swappers

Inspired by other food swaps across the country, we aim to be a group of kind folks who meet several times a year to swap homemade 7 homegrown food and celebrate the diversity of foodstuffs available in our community.

We’ll swap most anything that is homemade or homegrown:

  • Extra garden produce (fruits, veggies, herbs, nuts, etc.)
  • Seeds
  • Wild-harvested / foraged foods (including wild game)
  • Home-canned items (high-acid food only)
  • Home-dehydrated & frozen goods
  • Homemade lacto-fermented foods
  • Home-grown eggs, meats, milk, etc.
  • Home baked items (breads, cookies, cakes, etc.)

For more info:

Volunteer Code Writer Wanted

by Catherine Haug

As I mentioned in a July newsletter, ESP would like to add a new feature to our website called The Stuff Exchange, to help our community members locate other community members who regularly have food stuffs or skills for sale or trade; for example, eggs, composted manure or yard work.

This directory of free listings would be for individuals and families, not for businesses.

Our blog format does not lend itself to such a directory, so we believe we would need to add new functionality to our site. None of us has the skills for this task, so we need the help of someone with development experience.

If you are interested, or know of someone who might be interested, please contact me: cat(at)essentialstuff.org (email address disguised for security).

Thanks!
