Unused, Expired Prescription Disposal

by Catherine Haug, October 4, 2011

Do you have expired or unused medications for disposal? DO NOT put them in the trash nor flush them down the toilet, as this method of disposal leads to contaminated ground water and soil. But you do have options:

Drop Box

Thanks to a grant secured by the Waste Not Project, a white drop box for unused pills/tablets/capsules is now available in the lobby of the Flathead County Justice Center (Sheriff’s office) at 920 South Main, during their normal office hours.

  • White drop box is a secure container in a secure location;
  • Prescription meds and supplements;
  • Dry medications in pill, tablet or capsule form only;
  • No needles or liquids;
  • Access daily;
  • Contents will be properly disposed in the Flathead County Landfill.

More information on the Daily InterLake website: County offers drug disposal site (Oct 4). See related older story: Health board discusses drug disposal, securing trash (May 17).

    Annual Operation Medicine Cabinet

    If you have needles or liquids for disposal, save them up (along with pill-form medications) for the annual Operation Medicine Cabinet, for drop-off at Flathead County Health Department and North Valley Hospital. See Waste Not Project for more info.
